February is the month to love our alumni and acknowledge the remarkable individuals who once filled the halls of Grand Rapids Public Schools (GRPS) as students and have now returned as devoted educators. One such inspiring story is that of Juanita Toronto, a proud graduate of Central High School, class of 1995, who now teaches at the Gerald R. Ford Academic Center.
Toronto reflects back to her preschool days, recalling a moment with her teacher, Mrs. Robinson, who asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up. Without a moment's hesitation, she confidently declared, “I’m going to be a teacher.” That early spark of determination set the path for her future, a path she always envisioned leading her back to GRPS to serve her community.
Having attended Dickinson Elementary, Burton Middle School, and Central High School, she graduated in 1995, and today she is proud to live out the dream she held onto for so many years. The influence of GRPS on her life has been profound: her teachers believed in her, nurtured her talents, and inspired her to reach for the stars. One teacher, in particular, left an indelible mark on her life: her third-grade teacher, Colleen Tyson. “Even after all these years, seeing her takes me right back to being that small, excited child who felt smart, empowered, and deeply loved—because the warmth and encouragement she gives me has never changed.” Shares Toronto. “That kind of care and connection is exactly what I strive to bring to my own students. “
After more than 20 years of teaching in the district, Toronto knows that this profession goes beyond a job – it’s a calling. Having grown up in this very community, she understands the unique challenges and opportunities faced by her students. She sees reflections of her own experiences in them and hopes to instill a sense of future success within each student. As a GRPS alumna and a parent of a current student, the meaning behind her work deepens. It’s about uplifting every student, ensuring they feel seen, valued, and capable of achieving their dreams.
What Toronto treasures most about her role in GRPS is the chance to work alongside passionate colleagues, ignite inspiration in her students, and foster a community that emphasizes growth and learning. Each day, she contributes to a culture of excellence, guiding both students and fellow educators toward their highest potential.
Juanita Toronto’s journey with GRPS is one she will always cherish – from her early dreams as a preschooler to her proud graduation and now to her role as a devoted educator committed to making a meaningful difference.
