February is "Love Our Alumni" month at Grand Rapids Public Schools, and few stories embody that sentiment more than Krista VanderLugt’s. A proud 1996 graduate of Ottawa Hills High School, VanderLugt’s connection to GRPS runs deep—not just through her own education, but through the path that led her back to the very classroom where her love of learning was first nurtured.

In the heart of February, we are celebrating "We Love Our Alumni,” which showcases the journeys of former GRPS students who have gone on to make a difference in the community and returned to work at the district. One such story is that of Birgitte (Krontoft) Rizkalla, a 1992 graduate of City High, who now teaches 4th grade at Buchanan Elementary.

Among this year’s standout stories is that of Nick Maodush-Pitzer, a 2011 graduate of City High School and a passionate educator at Blandford School.

Among those returning was Benjamin Cannon, a proud 2011 graduate of Creston High School, who is now serving as the Family and Community Engagement Coordinator at Franklin Campus.

One of those inspiring alumni is Kenyatta (Hill) Hill-Hall, a 2001 graduate of Ottawa Hills High School and now the principal at Grand Rapids University Preparatory Academy (UPrep).
