We Love Our Alumni - From Student to Passionate GRPS Teacher

In the heart of February, we are celebrating "We Love Our Alumni,” which showcases the journeys of former GRPS students who have gone on to make a difference in the community and returned to work at the district. Among this year’s standout stories is that of Nick Maodush-Pitzer, a 2011 graduate of City High School and a passionate educator at Blandford School.

Maodush-Pitzer’s journey with GRPS began as a sixth-grade student at Blandford, where his love for learning and the outdoors took root. “I had an amazing experience learning and working in the outdoors while a sixth-grade student at Blandford School,” recalls Maodush-Pitzer. His time there was transformative, instilling in him a passion for education and nature that would guide his future career.

During college, he returned to Blandford as a Spring Camp counselor, helping facilitate the school's annual end-of-year camping experience. That opportunity proved to be life-changing. “Being with the Blandford students in that capacity was an eye-opening and life-altering experience. After my first year as a counselor, I changed my major to Education with the dream of fostering that same passion and excitement for the outdoors in my own classroom.”

Maodush-Pitzer continued supporting Blandford’s Spring Camp for five years before completing his student teaching at the school. His teaching career began with four years in a fifth-grade classroom at C.A. Frost, but when a position opened at Blandford, he eagerly applied. “I couldn’t wait to throw my hat in the ring and apply for the position,” he shares.

Reflecting on his time as a student, he describes his entire sixth-grade year as his fondest memory. “Being able to learn in and about the natural world with the level of rigor expected at Blandford made the school a second home for me. I was excited to go to school every day, knowing that my teachers would support, encourage, and challenge me in new ways.” Participating in projects like the Leaf Collection, International Project, Sugarbush Study, Wildflower Study, and Spring Camp pushed him beyond his comfort zone, offering challenges he never imagined possible in a school setting. “Those core memories shaped who I am as a person and as an educator. They taught me the power of believing in both the learning process and the people guiding it.”

Although many of his former teachers have retired,  Maodush-Pitzer remains connected with those who played a pivotal role in his journey. Cheri McKay and Jeff Lende, his Blandford teachers, continue to provide guidance and support, ensuring that the same transformative experience he had as a student remains alive for today’s learners. “Having them as a listening ear and guiding voice has had a lasting impact on my teaching. More importantly, their support helps make the Blandford experience just as memorable and amazing for current students as it was for me.”

Nick Maodush-Pitzer’s journey from student to educator reflects the lasting influence of GRPS and the dedicated teachers who shape young minds. His story reminds us of the power of education, mentorship, and a deep-rooted passion for learning.

Happy "We Love Our Alumni" month, GRPS family!
