We Love Our Alumni - Coming Full Circle A GRPS Journey Back to the Classroom

February is "Love Our Alumni" month at Grand Rapids Public Schools, and few stories embody that sentiment more than Krista VanderLugt’s. A proud 1996 graduate of Ottawa Hills High School, VanderLugt’s connection to GRPS runs deep—not just through her own education, but through the path that led her back to the very classroom where her love of learning was first nurtured.

Today, VanderLugt teaches first grade at Brookside Elementary School, the same school where she once sat as a wide-eyed student in second and third grade. What makes her story even more remarkable is that she now teaches in the very classroom where she once listened intently to her teacher reading aloud, igniting a lifelong passion for stories and education.

"I loved my time as a GRPS student and have always wanted to come back as a teacher,” said VanderLugt. "Now, I share my love of reading with my own students.”

Some of VanderLugt’s fondest memories from childhood revolve around Storytime. She still remembers sitting on the carpet while Mrs. Stob read The BFG, enthralled by the world of giants and dreams. That same love of storytelling has found a new home in her classroom, where Storytime remains a cherished part of the day. "We've had many exciting adventures through our shared stories," states VanderLugt.

Though her former teachers have all retired, their impact remains. The lessons they imparted, the warmth they showed, and the joy they found in teaching continue to inspire VanderLugt each day. As she reads to her students, she sees the same spark in their eyes that she once had—a spark that led her back to Brookside, a full circle, to nurture the next generation of GRPS students.

Krista VanderLugt’s story is a testament to the enduring influence of educators and the deep-rooted love alumni have for the schools that shaped them. Her journey is not just about coming home—it’s about paying forward the inspiration she once received, one story at a time.
